Japanese Encephalitis (Ixiaro)

Japanese Encephalitis is a viral infection spread by mosquitoes in rural parts of Asia and the Western Pacific.

Though rare, it can lead to brain inflammation, seizures, and long-term neurological damage. There is no specific treatment, which makes prevention through vaccination essential for at-risk travelers.

Vaccine details

Who needs it

Travelers spending extended time (typically more than a month) in rural or agricultural areas of countries like India, China, Thailand, Vietnam, or Indonesia — especially during monsoon season — should strongly consider this vaccine. It’s also recommended for those planning extensive outdoor activities like hiking or biking in affected areas.

When to get it

Start at least 4 to 6 weeks before departure. The vaccine requires two doses spaced 28 days apart for full protection.

What to expect

You’ll receive your first dose in clinic and we’ll schedule the second based on your travel timeline. This vaccine is well tolerated and offers long-lasting protection after the full series is complete.
